Florence
Florence was the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance. Politically, economically, and culturally it was the most important city in Europe for almost 250 years; from before 1300 until the early 1500s. Florentines developed both Renaissance and neoclassical Architecture; around every corner are stunning examples of this art form from grand Palaces to humble churches. While in Florence, be sure to take in:

Galleria degli Uffizi – The Uffizi Gallery is one of the world's top art museums - it houses some of the most important works of the Renaissance, including works by Leonardo da Vinci, Giotto, Botticelli and Michelangelo.

The National Museu of Bargello – the works of the great sculptors are here, including Michelangelo, Donatello, Ammannati, and many others.

Accademia Gallery – The Accademia houses Michelangelo's David, easily the most famous sculpture in the world. Once inside, you'll also see Michelangelo's unfinished and powerful Prisoners, along with a few works by Perugino, Giambologna, and Botticelli.

Pitti Palace – The Pitti Palace houses important collections of paintings and sculpture, works of art, porcelain, silver and period costumes. The rooms contain works by Raphael, Titian, Caravaggio and many others. The beautiful Boboli Gardens, grand example of Italian Renaissance gardens, are on the hill behind the palace.

Museo dell’Opera del Duomo – the Cathedral Museum with artworks formerly in the Duomo and surrounding religious buildings, including sculptures by Donatello and another version of the Pieta by Michelangelo.

Florence is considered by many to be an open-air museum. If you are interested in architecture, for example, you don't need to visit any museums: many of the palaces and squares are masterpieces in their own right. Designed by Michelozzo, Andrea di Cambio and Brunelleschi, among many others, many of the great palaces and piazzas in Florence are spectacular to behold. The main squares often display statues by Giambologna or Michelangelo. Ponte Vecchio, Old Bridge, is a treasure to admire. Plan a Private Tour and design your own route to wander through these lovely streets and Piazzas at your own pace.
