Tuscany
Tuscany has an area of roughly 23,000 square kilometers and is regarded as the true birthplace of the Italian Renaissance. Its capital is Florence, with the cities of Siena, Pisa, and San Gimignano, making it one of Italy’s most popular destinations. Six Tuscan localities have been named UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and it has been home to many influential people in the history of arts and science Dante, Botticelli, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Galileo, to name just a few. Some of the highlights of Tuscany’s provinces are:
Arezzo – the Palace of the Lay Fraternity, with a Gothic ground floor and a second floor by Bernardo Rosselino. The Episcopal Palace with a monument of the Grand Duke Ferdinando de’ Medici by Pietro Francavilla and the church of Santa Maria della Pieve.
Florence – The Ponte Vecchio, Church of San Lorenzo with the Medici Chapel, the Duomo and Uffizi Gallery, and numerous palaces, churches, and museums.
Lucca – situated on the river Serchio near the Tyrrhenian Sea it is famous for its fully intact Renaissance-era walls now used as a pedestrian promenade. The Academy of Sciences (1584) is the just one of several academies and libraries. It’s most famous son is Giacomo Puccini
Massa and Carrara - nestled in the Apuane Alps, Carrara is internationally known as the city of marble. Learn more by means of a visit to the marble museum and artists workshops in the city, and then a tour of the impressive quarries themselves.
Pisa – lying at the junction of two rivers, the Arno and Serchio, which form a laguna at the Tyrrhenian Sea, it is known worldwide for its leaning tower. The city also contains more than 20 historic churches, several palaces and various bridges spanning the river Arno. Pisa is an ancient city founded by the Etruscans.
Siena – its historic centre is dominated by the Duomo and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is famous for its cuisine, art, museums, medieval cityscape and the Palio, a horse race held twice a year in the shell shaped Piazza del Campo.
